Whenever you buy a remanufactured starter or alternator, you will see a "core charge" listed. A core charge is an amount of money you provide up front, which is returned or credited back to you when you return your old part. The remanufacturing company wants your old part as a "core" for their reman program.
When you buy a remanufactured unit, you typically have to provide the remanufacturer with the old starter. The old, broken starter is referred to as a core, and you will usually have to pay an additional core charge if you don’t provide it to the manufacturer.

If you buy it from a parts store they are all remanufactured. When they remanufacture parts the only thing kept is the shell. All of the screws and internal workings are changed. Most of the time they're reman even from the dealer depending on how old your car is.
If you turn the key and hear a clicking sound instead of the engine turning over or had to turn the key several times before the auto starter engages, it is probably time to replace these bad starters with a new car starter from Advance Auto Parts.
I have had only one starter go out on me but I bought a rebuilt one and it has been great. Go to someone with a good reputation, check the BBB site. The one near me even offers a 1 year warranty on rebuilt starters and alternators. Not sure if that is normal .
I just put in this starter in May (95 Pathfinder) and it began failing in July!!! My prior one lasted nearly 5 years, so I'm way Unfortunately, where I live and work, it's flat, so no popping the clutch to get going All I can do now is beat the starter and pray when it acts up or lack of acting up Thank you for your time!
If you are thinking of replacing your starter save some cash and buy the contacts and replace. is a great resource. Again the alternator is a bit more complex to rebuild but it can be done. I bought a new remanufactured starter for my 80 series. Then I found out I could've just replaced the contacts.
